The jury

The Journalism Science Alliance jury is composed of five external, independent members, who decide on the winning proposals. They were selected in consultation between EJC and NOVA and have sound knowledge of investigative journalism in Europe, the use of science in investigative journalism and challenges faced by local media in Europe.

The Journalism Science Alliance partners will not interfere or influence the deliberations and decisions of the jury.

Sanne Breimer

Sanne Breimer is the founder of Inclusive Journalism and a global media strategist, trainer, coach, and researcher. She helps journalists, storytellers, and leaders apply decolonial media practices, explore positionality, and create narratives that challenge the status quo.
Sanne works with international media organizations, including SembraMedia, Thibi, and Solutions Insights Lab (SIL), and has led projects across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Before moving into training and advisory work, she spent over a decade in senior roles at the Dutch national public broadcaster, specializing in radio, digital media, and innovation.
Sanne is Dutch with Frisian roots, she divides her time between Europe and Southeast Asia.

Adam Bychawski

Adam Bychawski is a freelance investigative journalist who has received high commendations from judges at the UK Press Awards and the British Journalism Awards. He is a former reporter for openDemocracy and his work has been published in the Guardian, the Observer and DeSmog.

Miguel Castanho

Miguel Castanho graduated in Biochemistry and holds a PhD in biophysics. He is the head of the biochemistry department of the School of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, and works on the development of innovative drugs. In the past, he had several roles related to Science/Society interface while coordinator or member of working groups of scientific societies and academic institutions. In 2016-2017 Miguel Castanho was vice-president of the public Portuguese national science-funding agency, FCT. He regularly advocates for science in press articles for the public.

Adriana Homolova

Freelance data journalist with 10+ years specialising in cross-border investigations and data skills training. Since 2020, coordinates data training at Dataharvest conference. Regular contributor to Follow The Money’s Brussels desk, covering EU scandals and policy impacts. Recipient of the European Press Prize. Mentor for IJ4EU cross-border grants. Previously worked with Lost in Europe, Pointer, Investico, and OneWorld. Passionate about democratising data skills for journalists through teaching and mentorship.

Daniela Ovadia

Science journalist with a medical and neuroscientific background, Daniela Ovadia is Scientific Director of Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism (CESJ) and co-director of the Neuroscience and Society Lab at University of Pavia (Italy). She is editor-in-chief of Univadis Medscape Italy, professor of Ethics of research and research communication at University of Pavia and professor of Communication of science at SISSA – Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati in Trieste. She’s been WP leader of the Horizon 2020 Swafs project RI4C2 on Knowledge ecosystem for research at academic, WP leader of the Digital work package of the EC2U inter universities alliance and Ethical internal advisor of the ERC project PROMENADE. She is currently WP leader of the Ethics and best practices work package of the ERC project FRONTIERS.
