Description
The UNVEEL project investigates the systemic social, economic, and political forces hindering the recovery of the critically endangered European eel. By examining how the species is caught, commercialized, and consumed across Europe, the investigation aims to expose the blurred lines between legal exploitation pathways and criminal smuggling networks, as well as the corporate lobbying paralyzing vital conservation policies. Through a solutions-oriented approach that combines expert research with field reporting on the socioeconomic realities of local fishing communities, UNVEEL will provide an actionable, evidence-based roadmap for the policy, traceability, and law enforcement reforms urgently needed to save the species.
“We are very pleased that, thanks to this grant, we will be able to conduct in-depth research on the status of the European eel, one of the most fascinating and enigmatic species in the animal kingdom. The biodiversity crisis deserves much more attention than it currently receives because it is the greatest environmental problem of our time.” — Eduardo Robaina Artiles
