Description
“Battery Nation: Powering Europe, Charged with Hidden Costs” investigates the rapid expansion of Hungary’s battery industry and its environmental, regulatory and social consequences within the wider European energy transition. Led by Átlátszó in cooperation with researchers from ELTE CERS, the project will examine permitting, environmental monitoring, hazardous waste management, industrial safety and the impacts on affected local communities. The investigation will produce an evidence-based article series and a documentary-style report.
“The government was unprepared not only for the risks of becoming a battery superpower, but also for the fact that local communities have every right to ask what is being released into their air, water, and soil.” — Zsuzsa Bodnar, senior journalist Átlátszó
