Tracking the forest's silent crisis: How many trees have been affected by climate change in Catalonia over the last 20 years?

Spain

Description

We plan to investigate the forest mortality crisis affecting Catalonia’s forests over the past 20 years, quantifying for the first time the exact extent of tree death and degradation caused by climate change across the entire region. This project wants to groundbreaking new information through the first comprehensive quantification of forest mortality at regional scale using dual satellite model validation. We will identify the most vulnerable tree species and geographic areas, distinguishing between climate-induced mortality and human interventions through cross-referencing with administrative data.

Forests are complex ecosystems; there are no easy solutions to the current crisis, and this message must reach citizens to open the debate.” –  Arnau Urgell, Science reporter, NACIO
