Zero Record: The Systematic Erasure of Child Abuse and Gender-Based Violence Statistics from Turkish Digital Media

Austria | Germany

Description

“Zero Record” is a transnational investigative journalism and science project examining how Türkiye systematically erases statistical data on femicide, child sexual abuse, and gender-based violence from its digital media landscape. Led by CORRECTIV’s exiled media Division in partnership with the University of Salzburg, the investigation will apply NLP and computational analysis to 500+ archived deleted articles preserved on an immutable blockchain to produce the first data-driven forensic account of this censorship. Findings will be published as long-form investigative reports, an open-access interactive data visualization, and a policy brief on press freedom and gender equality.

“When a statistic disappears, a woman disappears twice. First from safety, then from the record. Our project exists to make that second erasure visible. We are not just archiving deleted articles. We are documenting a political decision: that certain women should not be counted.” — Hanan Badr, Head of the Public Spheres and Inequalities Division, Universität Salzburg
